practical skills

Stop correcting “damocles”ng/ character development:
For this project I played several different parts, I played: Eddie, Dr Scott and a phantom. Each of my characters were very diverse which made my development of them a little difficult as I had to embody 3 different people.
I played a phantom in the beginning of the musical, this character is basically a shadow figure I roamed around the stage as a way to frighten Janet and Brad. For this character my costume needed to be black it needed to stand out but also look mysterious, we decided that the phantoms should wear fishnets, a leotard and a tail coat. To further emphasises the shadow figure we wore lace masks that covered a majority of our face. This character had no actually lines so i had to use my body to act, I used the live stage version in 2015 as a guide of how to act this character.
Towards the end of act 1 I played Eddie, a rock n roll singer. His character only came on for one song then was killed by frank. For this characters costume I done some research about rock n roll in 1973 and watched  clips of Meat loaf performing. My costume was a leather jacket, ripped jeans, and a rock n roll top, I also added on the side of my jeans some chains and I wore a bandanna on my head. To get in to character I watched different clips of Eddie performing hot patootie. His character had a romance with Colombia to portray that, during the song I mainly danced with her. Eddie character disliked Frank and Frank disliked him the death scene at the end showed this.
My character in act 2 was Dr Scott, his character was a scientist. my main struggle with this character was that he was in a wheelchair, I wasn't able to practice with the wheelchair until show week which made it hard to develop this character. Dr Scott costume was easy to figure out, we went with the basic blazer and shirt with a bow tie. I had a blanket covering my legs so I kept the fishnets on so I wouldn't have to change for Rose tint my world, I would just slowly remove the blanket. when I got the wheelchair I kept practising saying my lines while moving around the stage with the wheelchair. Dr Scott was also Eddie's uncle so to show sympathy in Eddie teddy I used my facial expressions to show surprise and upset.

Singing development:
Throughout the musical I had the high harmony in all the songs other than my ones. To make sure I don't mess up the harmony I would stand facing a corner and sing it over and over again.
For My song Hot patootie I struggled a lot with pronouncing all the word because it had a fast tempo. To help me pronounce all the words I had to work on my diction and breathing while dancing and singing. To work on my diction I started off by speaking the words in a slow pace then gradually getting faster. To work on my breathing I sat down and figured out what words/ phrases I would breath after. M e and my singing teacher went over this song several times making sure I wouldn't swap and start singing in my head voice rather then my chest voice.
For my song Eddie's teddy I had to jump notes quiet a bit, which wasnt easy. I start off by talking first then go on to singing I struggled a lot with the timing of the song, to help me with the timing my teacher note bashed the song out this helped me listen to when I would have to start singing.

Dance and choreographing development:
I had no experience in dance or choreographing prior to this year, but for this project I surprised myself by how quick I was able to pick up choreography and my ability to choreograph a whole dance. I had to use skills I had learnt from Ballet, jazz and musical theatre create the dance for 'sword of Damocles.'
I was in most of the dances in the musical, my dancing in the second act varied between moving my upper body mainly as I was sat I a wheelchair. I moved my legs a little towards the end of the musical.

Singing 15th May 2019
In this session our singing teacher went through all the solo song and made improvemnts to how we sang them. when we went through my slo songs my main struggle was to not sing in my head voice instead of singing in my chest voice. To help me stick to my chest voice my singing teacher belted the one with me a few times.
When going through Eddie's teddy my main struggle was timing so my teacher note bashed the song over and over so I could listen closely to the notes that I had to change key for or start singing for.

Jazz/ musical theatre 16th May 2019
In this session we ran through the whole musical for our dance teacher. she then gave us feedback:
  • watch out for spacing, we need to use more of the stage rather then clumping on one side
  • Make sure the energy is high from beginning to end
  • We all need to stay in character regardless if anything goes wrong
  • I need to make more eye contact with the audience
  • Make all the movements stronger and more dramatic
